NOTB Fantasy Hockey Guide

Breaking down all 31 teams must draft players ranked outside the top-80 for the 2019-2020 fantasy hockey season.

Anaheim Ducks – Rickard Rakell, RW

Rakell had a down year in 2019 but with Perry out of the picture, he is slotted in to play first line minutes alongside captain Ryan Getzlaf. He should have no shortage of power play ice time and with a larger role in the lineup, has the opportunity to get back to being a 30-goal scorer. A great option for mid to late round drafting.

Carolina Hurricanes – Warren Foegele, LW

Although his regular season numbers do not jump off the page, Foegele managed to tally 9 points in 15 playoff games last season during the Canes historic run where he saw only 15 minutes of ATOI. He is the type of player that offers value aside from just points and if given the opportunity to jump into a top role could be a major contributor. You’ll definitely want to keep him on your free agent watchlist if you feel like you have better options out of the draft.

Chicago Blackhawks – Brandon Saad, LW

With Chicago in a turnover stage featuring a mix of younger talent and veteran leadership, Saad flies a little bit under the radar. Surprisingly, he was not featured on ESPN’s Top 250 rankings despite having 3 separate 50 point seasons and 4 separate 200+ shot seasons. The 26 year old fills in nicely as far as depth scoring and if he continues to average around 17 minutes ATOI there is no reason why you shouldn’t pounce on him as a late round option.

Columbus Blue Jackets – Gustav Nyquist, LW/C/RW

After 8 seasons with the Red Wings and a short stint in San Jose, Nyquist has found a comfy home in Columbus after signing a 4-year deal for $22 million. With this new contract in place and a projected spot on the first line alongside Pierre-Luc Dubois and Cam Atkinson, don’t be surprised if he reaches another new career high in points.

Dallas Stars – Corey Perry, RW

I still believe in Corey Perry and not because we share the same birthday. Although his time with Anaheim is up, I think this aging power forward still has some gas in the tank. With the addition of himself and Joe Pavelski, Dallas becomes a major threat coming out of the Western Conference. Perry has scored 30+ goals in 6 of 11 seasons that he has played over 60 games including his 50 goal season in 2010-11 and his 43 goal season in 2013-14. The NHL gets younger and younger every year but I still feel Perry, even in his mid-30s has late draft value in any fantasy league.

Detroit Red Wings – Filip Hronek, D

Some of you may be asking, who in the “insert cuss here” is Filip Hronek, well let me give you some insight. He was drafted mid 2nd round by Detroit in 2016. In his one year of junior with the Saginaw Spirit back in 2016-17 he scored 61 points in 59 games as a defensemen while also adding 60 PIMs and a +15 rating. In 77 professional games between the AHL & NHL last season Hronek managed to score 47 points and add 75 PIMs. There is a lot of sneaky value in Hronek and at 21 you can hope that this is not even close to his peak. Look to scoop this defensemen up in late rounds of your draft as a sleeper with low risk and high upside.

Edmonton Oilers – James Neal, LW

A weapon both on and off the ice, James Neal is looking to find his scoring touch on a new club this season. The 5-time 25+ goal scorer should get a chance to play on a top power play unit lined up next to the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Florida Panthers – Evgenii Dadonov, RW

Zzzzzz. Oh sorry, did I wake you? Nearly half way through our list sits a guy you probably should not sleep on, Evgenii Dadonov. If a 70-point season last year isn’t enough to buy high on Dadonov then consider the fact he’s slotted in alongside Barkov and Huberdeau. With their new number 1 goaltender, Florida is looking to turn a corner this year and become a playoff team in a tough Eastern Conference. If you want to get in on the Florida train mid way through the draft, go ahead and scoop this guy off the board.

Los Angeles Kings – Adrian Kempe, RW

With the Kings on a turnover period in terms of their organization, Kempe stands out as one of the bright young stars of this storied franchise. The 2014 first round pick has shown some promise in the past few years and could be in line for a jump in ice-time and overall offensive role with the team.

Minnesota Wild – Kevin Fiala, LW

I’ll be the first to admit that I do not know a ton about Minnesota and when it comes to the draft I usually stay away from their players but if you are looking for a bit of a risk Kevin Fiala may be what you need. He split the year between Nashville and Minny last season but now that he is settled into his new threads look for good second line production and some power-play points to go along with it.

Montreal Canadiens – Jonathan Drouin, C

Projected to slot in on a talented second line alongside Max Domi and Artturi Lehkonen, Drouin looks to improve in his 3rd year as a Montreal Canadien. As a relatively experienced 24-year old with 322 NHL games under his belt, Drouin is set to continue his mid level production coming off his second 50+ point season. Don’t be surprised to see a career high in 2019-2020 for this young talent.

Nashville Predators – Viktor Arvidsson, RW

After nearly 3 straight seasons with 30+ goals, Arvidsson is becoming one of the few guarantees for goal scoring in today’s NHL. In seasons where he’s managed to play 75+ games, he has shown the ability to surpass the 60 point marker and 240 shot marker. Arguably the most talented player on a stacked Nashville lineup expect no slow down from this guy going into the 2019-2020 season.

New Jersey Devils – Kyle Palmieri, RW

Palmieri is inching closer to the 500 game mark as a late 20’s veteran on an up and coming NJ Devils team. Slotted in on the first line with Taylor Hall and Nico Hischier just screams production for this 3 time 50-point scorer. As long as these three can stay healthy and in the lineup expect Palmieri to be a safe pick any time after the 10th round.

New York Islanders – Semyon Varlamov / Thomas Greiss, G

This team altogether wins with defense. There is no sure thing on the offensive end for them apart from Matthew Barzal so why not consider one of their goalies. Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss shared the starts last season for the Isnlanders and combined for 48 wins, a 2.21 GAA, a .929 SV% and 11 shutouts. Those stats were enough to win them a share of the William M. Jennings trophy awarded to the goaltender(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it. With a similar game plan under the likes of Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz you can expect more low scoring, boring hockey from the Islanders.

New York Rangers – Kaapo Kakko, RW

I don’t know what it is about him but I absolutely love Kaapo Kakko. The 2nd round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft has a lot of hype surrounding him and I think he has the chance to live up to all of it. Having the opportunity to play against grown men in the Finnish Elite League will make this young prospect NHL-ready when it comes to opening night.

Pittsburgh Penguins – Alex Galchenyuk, C

It’s hard to not be good when you play for a top line on Pittsburgh. Whether you’re next to Crosby or Malkin your points are almost guaranteed to see a spike. I don’t think there is any reason why this guy doesn’t go earlier than projected in the draft and with potentially high upside do not be afraid to take a shot on him between the 7th-10th round range.

San Jose Sharks – Kevin Labanc, RW

Entering his 4th full season in the league, Labanc has only shown improvement every year. So far he has strung together 20, 40 & 56 point seasons respectively and looks to add to that growth in 2019-2020. Also interesting to note that roughly 36% of his points last season came on special teams so keep that in the back of your mind when structuring your fantasy team.

St. Louis Blues – Vince Dunn, D

There are not many defensemen outside of the perennial number ones that can be considered locks but there is potential in the case of Vince Dunn. The Stanley Cup hangover may cause a slow start for this young blue-liner but expect him to be back in full form just a few weeks in. His points total from year 1 to year 2 saw a double digit jump and now that his sophomore season has passed him expect this sleeper to be a consistent 40-50 point star for seasons to come.

Tampa Bay Lightning – Mikhail Sergachev, D

There are very few bad players on the Tampa Bay Lightning. After a disappointing end to their previous season expect these players to come out and play with a vengeance. Most of the scoring on the defensive end should come from Sergachev and Hedman so on this high-flying point producing attack keep the young d-man in mind when searching for mid-level defensemen.

Toronto Maple Leafs – Alexander Kerfoot, C

A ton of scoring will come from the top 2 lines on Toronto but on a team that could strike at any moment throughout the lineup, do not shy away from picking up Kerfoot in your draft. Toronto has extended him to be part of this powerful lineup and you can assume he will be a key piece for what everyone can hope is a cup contending team. No Leaf left behind when it comes to drafting and if you’re a Leaf fan with no players on your roster late, Kerfoot is your guy.

Vancouver Canucks – Quinn Hughes, D

This is one of the next stud defensemen in the NHL, DO NOT let Quinn Hughes go undrafted. On a number one power play alongside Boeser, Pettersson and Horvat you’re bound to get points. I would say it’s low risk and very high reward with this guy in any of the last 5 rounds and if you’re really confident take him even earlier than that.

Vegas Golden Knights – Reilly Smith, RW

You had zero idea who Reilly Smith was until he joined the Vegas Golden Knights back in 2017 and if you still don’t know him, introduce yourself. The 4-time 50+ point getter is slotted in a top 2 line role on a stacked Vegas team and shouldn’t see much of a dip in production. You’re content with 50 points from Smith and anything after that is a bonus.

“MAN ROCKET!” This guy is one of the best all around players in the league. Whether it’s points, hits or STP, he finds a way onto the score sheet almost every night. If that isn’t enough for you, you can also use having him on your fantasy team as a pick up line at the bar. Girls love T.J. Oshie (satisfaction not guaranteed).

What is the one thing Nikolaj Ehlers has that Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor don’t? That’s right, a contract. This is one guy you know will start the season with the team and if they are unable to get either Connor, Laine or both signed by the season opener expect an increased role for Ehlers with some increased production to go along with it.
